One lesson of the Today Marks the Beginning program helps students create a collage portrait of a peacemaker. The Peacemakers include diverse men and women who are either alive now or were living in the last century. All of them have dedicated a good portion of their lives to making peace all over the globe and many have won the Nobel Prize. The children were challenged to really focus and see things in a new way. They were asked to make something out of nothing, just like these heroes who tackled extremely difficult situations and, with very little money, accomplished great things. In the portraits, a bottle top could become an eye. A straw becomes a nose; a piece of discarded jewelry, a hat. The downtown Dallas Public Library is currently exhibiting the students’ portraits and beautiful photos of the creative process by photographer John Katz through April.
