MasterPEACE: Young Artists Making a Kinder World uses visual art, music, yoga and theatre to teach 3rd through 8th graders about Great Peacemakers, about tools for conflict resolution, EMPAYHT, and 11 other lessons. The Great Peacemakers Like You and Me lesson of the Today Marks the Beginning program helps students create a collage portrait of a peacemaker. The Peacemakers include diverse men and women who are either alive now or were living in the last century. All of them have dedicated a good portion of their lives to making peace all over the globe and many have won the Nobel Prize. The children were challenged to really focus and see things in a new way. They were asked to make something out of nothing, just like these heroes who tackled extremely difficult situations and, with very little money, accomplished great things. In the portraits, a bottle top could become an eye. A straw becomes a nose; a piece of discarded jewelry, a hat.
In the INFLUENCE lesson, students discuss the graphic images that influence our choices in what we buy, eat, and do. Then the young artists create posters that INFLUENCE viewers to make more peaceful choices. Check out the resulting art created by the young women from Irma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School at our INFLUENCE blog.
